Mitchell Lake leads in Hennepin County’s Lake Pledge

Posted: 1/26/26

Aquatic Invasive Species (AIS) can cause great harm to aquatic ecosystems by spreading rapidly and outcompeting native species. Knowing how to prevent the spread of AIS is critical to protecting the health of our lakes, which is why Hennepin County, in collaboration with local lake associations, developed the Lake Pledge program. Neighbors and recreational users of Hennepin County lakes can take the pledge to help protect their lake and other Minnesota waters, view resources tailored to the various ways they use the lake, and earn badges by taking additional steps to protect lakes from AIS.

Top lakes: 1st Christmas (78%), 2nd Weaver (66%), 3rd Mitchell (63%). Rankings based on play percentage since respective years.

In addition to individual action items on the site, local lake associations can compete to recruit the most pledges. For every additional 10% of lakeshore residents who complete the pledge, associations become eligible for $1,000 in funding from Hennepin County to be used towards AIS prevention and lake improvements.  In 2025, Mitchell Lake, located in RPBCWD, took 3rd place across participating Hennepin County lake associations. By rallying their neighbors to take the pledge, Mitchell Lake Association reached 63% participation, securing the maximum $5,000 in funding  to support their conservation projects, educational outreach, and water quality programs in 2026. Congratulations, Mitchell Lake Association!
